Late last year Marc and I took over full responsibility for live support. For a while we were responsible for every question and criticism that came our way.

When we initially built Layers our philosophy was “less is more”. Instead of loading the theme with features we kept it simple and as easy to use as possible and based on the feedback we have received from day 1 we achieved this goal.

That being said, as more and more users have become familiar with Layers we realised the need to open up the scope for customizability.

With our nose to the ground, deep in the support section, we came up with a list of priorities for the next version of Layers and came up with a plan. The initial challenge was coming up with an interface that was still easy to use and understand while still unlocking the customizability many of your badly wanted.

We have achieved this and are super proud to be releasing Layers Pro 2 which features a new widget interface and much more customizability.

Layers Pro 2. More Power. More Control.

A bunch of new controls have been added to all the standard and Pro widgets in the latest version of Layers.

New Accordion Based Interface

Just as simple as before but with more power. The new accordion based interface allows us to keep the overall design of our unique widgets while still making new controls available in just a few clicks.

This has allowed us to add a number of options, including the ability for you to adjust button, tab and accordion hover states and more.

Font Control

For the first time ever in Layers you can now choose your fonts for each widget, slider and content block. Options include:

  1. Color
  2. Font size, line height and letter spacing
  3. Font weights
  4. Font style and font case

And pretty soon we will also provide you with the ability to choose your font family!

Ability to Add and Edit Borders

Adding borders to your widgets and content columns was a big feature that was missing from version 1 but that has changed with Layers Pro 2! You can now add borders on any side along with the ability to choose border style and  border radius.

More Button Control

In Layers 1 it was possible to set the color and we’d automatically apply the font and hover colors. There were also 3 size settings that you could choose from: small, medium and large. Well now we’ve unlocked all the available options. Take a quick look at the new interface:

The new button settings include:

  1. Background color
  2. Borders (including thickness, style and radius)
  3. Fonts styling
  4. Shadows
  5. Padding and Margins
  6. For the first time in Layers you’ll also be able to choose hover styling as well.

Page and Widget Animations

Let your pages come to life with new widget and page load animations! There are two areas which you can now apply them:

  • On Page Load – Any non-Layers builder page will now elegantly fade and blend in during the loading phase.
  • Widgets – Now when scrolling down any Layers page you will notice your widgets beautifully fade in and slide up.

We are excited to expand this feature in the future but area already incredibly happy with the subtle effect this new feature has on the feeling of quality when visiting a Layers site.

Images and Background also have New Options

New features in the background and image settings bring you the ability to do a number of cool new things:

Background Settings:

  1. Background repeat
  2. Background position
  3. Improved settings interface

Image Settings:

  1. Image resizing (set max width and max height of your images)
  2. Image radius
  3. And finally, a new lightbox setting

What is Part 2?

You may have noticed that we mention “Part 1” in the headline and there’s good reason for that. Brand new widget controls are just the first step in a big update that we hope to release in a phased approach. Some of the stuff you can look forward to in the near future is:

  1. Brand new header and footer customizability controls
  2. The ability to edit your blog list and single post pages without touching a line of code
  3. Much deeper sidebar customizability options
  4. New widgets

But for now we invite you to download the latest version of Layers and Layers Pro 2 and start enjoying our latest product.

Super chuffed with Layers and looking forward to getting involved with the new update – it looks great; well done!

With the new widgets planned, is there an email opt in widget?

To have the “Layers treatment” of a widget that allows sign ups and integrates properly with the major bulk email providers (Mailchimp, GetResponse, etc) would be A KILLER feature – all other third-party implementations and integrations are never satisfactory.

(even adding it as an option to the slider widget would be cool)

Will consider that! Thanks Tim!

Hi David – awesome update – thanks! Just noticed the new “Open in Lightbox” feature seems to not save when switched on?

Loving the Layers WP world! Thank you. Will 2.0 allow us to copy and paste widgets from one page to another? Then all we would need to do is change some content for the new page.

Hi Gary!

The Widget Favorites plugin can be installed free under Plugins → Add New and allows you to duplicate specific widgets right from the Customizer. For example, if you are editing a Layers page layout and have setup a Content Widget a specific way, you can click the duplicate widget button to create a copy of that widget to use elsewhere in the layout.
